Use the Winter to Plan a Better Yard for Spring

10/29/20261 min read

The sprinklers are blown out and the snow is on its way, so most folks in North Idaho stop thinking about their yard until April. But winter is actually the best time to plan your irrigation upgrades. When spring hits, everybody calls at once. If you already have a plan, you're first in line instead of waiting through the rush.

Here are a few upgrades worth thinking about over the winter:

- Smart Wi-Fi controller. A smart controller adjusts watering to the weather, so you're not running sprinklers in the rain. You can also control it from your phone, which is handy when you're away from home.

- Drip lines for beds. Flower beds, shrubs, and vegetable gardens do better with drip than with spray heads. Drip puts the water right at the roots, wastes less, and keeps leaves dry.

- New zones for dry spots. If part of your lawn turned brown every August while the rest stayed green, that area probably needs better coverage or its own zone.

- Fixing the trouble spots. Think back on the season. Heads that sprayed the driveway, soggy spots, or a zone that never seemed to shut off are all worth fixing before next season.

- A full new system. If you've been dragging hoses around all summer, a new sprinkler system might be the upgrade that changes everything.

A good way to start is to walk your yard now, while last summer is still fresh in your mind. Snap a few photos of the problem areas and jot down what bugged you most. That gives us a lot to work with when we sit down to plan.
